In honor of Women's History Month, we are amplifying the amazing work of Black Women's Health Imperative (BWHI) whose mission is "to lead the effort to solve the most pressing health issues that affect Black women and girls in the U.S. Through investments in evidence-based strategies, we deliver bold new programs and advocate health-promoting policies." BWHI is also the only national nonprofit dedicated solely to the health & wellness of Black women and girls.
As a female-founded and -led organization, Challah Back Girls is committed to using Challah as a thread that weaves together people from diverse backgrounds. Our hope is to share histories and stories that create collaboration and mutual support across minority communities. Through the power of food and ritual, we will highlight the work being done to advance social change and racial equity.
This month, we are amplifying the meaningful work of the Black, women-led organization: Black Women's Health Imperative (BWHI). By connecting people to the Jewish ritual of challah—a traditionally braided bread—we will support BWHI's efforts to make optimal health and well-being a reality for all Black women & girls.
The Conscious Kid (TCK) is an education, research, and policy organization dedicated to equity and promoting healthy identity development in youth. TCK supports companies, organizations, families, and educators in taking action to disrupt racism and injustice. As the Challah Back Org for the month of February, The Conscious Kid will be receiving all profit from our challah sales. Through our work connecting people to the Jewish ritual of challah—a traditionally Jewish, braided bread—we will support and amplify The Conscious Kid's efforts leading racial equity work through education. By identifying the centrality of race and racism, we can begin the process of improving the lives of people of color (Kolivoski et al., 2014).
NeighborFood Meals is a Chicago based non-profit dedicated to financially supporting Black and Latinx owned restaurants and the neighborhoods they serve during the COVID-19 crisis. When the pandemic forced restaurant closures and a financial crisis, NeighborFood Meals founders immediately thought of those who would bear the brunt of the impact.By raising money to purchase meals from restaurant partners and donating the meals to Chicago communities in need, NFM is empowering restaurants to support their employees and provide jobs while feeding their communities. During such a tumultuous year, we encourage you to join us in baking a huge change in these Chicago communities’ lives.
NOTE: We are taking a break from the kitchen and pausing our baking/shipping activities from December 20, 2020 - January 3, 2021. In lieu of that, we are expanding our fundraising efforts for NeighborFood Meals through January 2021!
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. People arriving at the U.S. border have the right to request asylum without being criminalized, turned back, or separated from their children. We are committed to educating ourselves and our Challah Back Squad on the value of IRC’s work every day this month (and beyond). It's absolutely crucial that we do what we can to help keep families together, support vulnerable people worldwide, and provide refugees with a safe space to find their voice in the US. We hope you will join this month to support IRC and enjoy your favorite flavored challah!
Saving Mothers was founded because no woman should die giving life. Each year, more than 300,000 women and girls die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. That’s one mother dying every two minutes. 75% of these deaths could have been prevented with low-cost interventions. For the past decade, our team of medical experts, local health care workers, and allied professionals have been implementing low-cost, high impact interventions around the globe to reduce birth-related complications, and prevent unnecessary maternal deaths. We are fundraising for Saving Mothers all month! This incredible organization works tirelessly to eradicate preventable maternal deaths and birth-related complications in low-resource settings locally as well as globally. Join us in spreading the love of the meaningful work Saving Mothers does.
Be'chol Lashon (Hebrew for "in every language”) does the important work to strengthen Jewish identity by raising awareness about the ethnic, racial and cultural diversity of varying Jewish identities and experiences. Be’chol Lashon brings the historic Jewish commitment to civil rights and racial justice forward into the 21st century.
Given that this month marks the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, we are fundraising for this organization to highlight and celebrate Jewish culture and diversity. With YOUR help (and appetite for round, sweet bread), our challah profits will support Be'chol Lashon in providing diversity training, research, experiential opportunities, and more to individuals, families, and organizations.
As we and many other students prepare for what this school year might look and feel like, we are excited to donate to the nation’s only organization focused on supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of young people of color, The Steve Fund.
This important organization works with a range of populations such as colleges, researchers, mental health experts, and families to promote programs and strategies that build an understanding and assistance for the mental and emotional health of the nation’s young people of color.
This week, we're donating all our profits to Southerners on New Ground (SONG), an Atlanta-based, Black-founded non-profit focusing on cultivating community and strength for LGBTQ individuals of varying identities in the south. Highlighting issues that impact a cross-section of minoritized communities, SONG provides political and social resources to promote transformation in criminal justice, immigrant rights, poverty, racism and many more issues. They work to create advocates, changemakers and loving community through training, policy advocacy, and social justice work.
This week, we're thrilled to be donating all of our profit to The Color of Autism as they remain committed to educating and assisting African American families with Autistic children. Many misdiagnosed and undiagnosed African American children in at-risk communities end up in the criminal justice system each year. Our support for The Color of Autism can provide much-needed services to those who need it the most.
This week, we are donating to the Innocence Project! This organization advocates for reforms that help prevent and address wrongful conviction.
We first came across Innocence Project while watching America's Got Talent. Contestant Archie Williams' story moved us (and millions) and brought to light the critical and transformative justice work that Innocence Project does to undo the harms of wrongful incarceration, especially towards black and brown communities.
This week we’re giving back to B3 Foundation: A Zach Banner Foundation! Founder, Zach Banner was the first NFL player to speak out against the rampant anti-Semitism we are witnessing. We are supporting Zach two-fold: giving back to his mission that through grassroots planning, B3 creates and empowers student leaders in underprivileged communities through local school partnerships, and by reminding our communities that we must use our voices for change in our nation.
This week we’re giving back to Campaign Zero! This organization supports the analysis of policing practices across the country by limiting police interventions, improving community interactions, and ensuring accountability.
This organization holds special significance as one of our Challah Back Girls used to work here! Through our challah sales, we were able to ensure housing solutions & supportive services to ensure individuals and families at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness have what they need to thrive.
Through our challah sales, our contribution to The Loveland Foundation helped make sure this organization could continue providing therapy support to Black women and girls nationally.
Through our challah sales, we helped The Okra Project sponsor Black Trans chefs to go into the homes of Black Trans people and cook healthy & home-cooked meals!
Make a donation to our social justice initiative with the link below. Your contribution will enable us to purchase materials like shipping supplies and ingredients so we may continue to bake the world a better place and support organizations that condemn the racial injustices plaguing our country. We are so very grateful for your generosity in advance!

Upcoming OOK (Out Of Kitchen) Announcement
What You Knead to Know This Month:
The Jewish holiday of Passover is coming up at the end of March! Long story short: when the Jews escaped Egypt, they didn't have time to let their bread rise before going into the desert, so they brought unleavened bread. To commemorate this, Jews do not eat leavened bread or bread products during Passover. This means, we will not be baking challah between March 19 through April 5.
